General Student Information
Housing
The
Pieksämäki Unit does not have its own student housing and students are
expected to make their own housing arrangements. According to
availability, it is possible for students studying at Diak to rent student
flats from The College of the Home Mission Society of the Church of
Finland (Sisis), which is located on the same campus. Enquiries concerning
vacant flats can be made via e-mail: toimisto(at)sisop.fi. It is also easy
to find inexpensive housing on the free market. On possibility is to
contact the housing rental agency, Pieksämäen Haka: from inside Finland
(015) 348 060 and from outside Finland +358 15 348 060.
Housing
for Exchange Students
The Diak Pieksämäki Unit will find housing
for international exchange students. The exchange students are expected to
cover the rental costs.
Meals
Students
can eat the major meals in the student cafeteria. The student price of
meals is € 3.00. A café can also be found on campus on the main floor of
building B.
Health Care Services
Student
health care is provided by the Pieksämäki municipal health care services.
A nurse is available on campus three days a week. Visitations to the
campus nurse are free of charge for the following: health counselling,
personal discussions, physical examination (when needed), vaccinations,
sick leave certification, allergy certification, first aid and accidents.
The nurse can refer students to a doctor, mental health specialist or
laboratories and make reservations for doctors.
Health
Care for Exchange Students
International exchange students
require travel and health insurance coverage for the entire exchange
period. If during their exchange period, students make study trips outside
of Finland they are required to be covered by travel insurance for that
period as well.
Services for Students with Special
Needs
The student cafeteria will provide special meals for those
with food allergies. Special food needs should be discussed with the
kitchen staff beforehand. Diak wants to support all students with special
needs. It is recommended that students provide information about any
special physical needs in advance.
Student Services
The
Pieksämäki Unit has two student advisors, Maija-Leena Lyyra and Saara
Nurmi. The advisors help students plan their studies and prepare for
future careers. Student tutors support new students in beginning their
studies, introduce them to the area, hobbies and services. A student
pastor is available for discussion and for support in difficult
situations. Information about contacting and meeting the student pastor
can be obtained from the students office.
Student
Facilities
The Diak Pieksämäki Unit operates on the same campus
as The College of the Home Mission Society of the Church of Finland
(Sisis) (see map). Pieksämäki Unit’s facilities are located primarily in
the building B. The student facilities are very diverse, including
computer labs, music rooms, domestic science classrooms, sports hall,
nursing science classrooms, art classrooms and library. Reservations of

Language
Studies for Exchange Students
International exchange students
can take part in English and Swedish lessons and classes in Finnish
language and culture. Availability of language training differs from
semester to semester.
Outdoor Activities
The
Pieksämäki area provides excellent outdoor activity and sporting
opportunities. Walking and exercise paths in the forests and along the
lake shores are easily accessible to everybody. The lake water is clean
and safe for swimming. There is also a canoeing club that rents canoes, by
which on can paddle through beautiful nature and along peaceful rivers.
The Anola Golf centre offers putting practice for beginners. On campus,
there is a sports hall open to all students for many kinds of activities.
In
winter, Finland is a country of snow, which means that everyone has an
opportunity to ski and learn to ski. Very close to campus are
well-maintained ski tracks that are perfect for the beginning skier. Also
close to campus is a swimming pool. During the Pieksämäki winter, it is
common to see people sitting out on the ice. They are ice fishing, which
is possible for anyone to learn and take part in. All you need to get
started is an ice fishing rod, line, bait and a bit of luck. Have fun!
